Two Movies about Dick
Whenever I see movies that inspire me to get off my ass and make some shit, I try to share. In the past week I’ve seen two. Both are character movies… is that a real thing? Well what I mean by that is both are movies that are driven by some amazing acting… as opposed to special effects or action or sex and stuff… though one of them has a shit ton of porn in it.
Frost/Nixon
This isn’t the one with a shit ton of porn in it. After seeing Notorious and W, Lisa and I talked about how difficult it is to play real people (Notorious is totally worth seeing for fans but I was really pissed that the guy who plays Puffy couldn’t even do the Puffy dance right). I just learned that this movie was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor last year, so I guess my acknowledgment of the super acting isn’t new, but Frost/Nixon is about the aftermath of the impeachment of Richard Nixon via the making of a long shot exclusive interview idea of a Mario Lopez level British talk show host. It’s better than it sounds.
Good Dick
This is a good couples movie about this video store employee weirdo who practically stalks this anti-social weirdo who comes in to the video store everyday to rent 70s porn. This is a super slow movie… not for a work night watch… more for a Friday night when you have nothing better to do than write about the movie you just watched. There’s a cool documentary about the sundance film festival in the extras on the DVD. The real Mario Lopez recommended this one to me (of course it’s about porn).
Second Hand Sureshots - a look into a digger’s life
This week only, Pitchfork is streaming Secondhand Sureshots. This is a must see for dj’s and record collectors about a handful of Stone’s Throw beatmakers’ quest for a good sample.
From the site - Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark “frosty” McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material.
Last Week’s Jam of the Week | As the World Falls Down by David Bowie
This was one of the jams i included in an 80s love song mix for Ashley and her main squeeze. I revisited the list this week and listened to this song over and over and over. I’ve come a long way cuz i remember that I always fast forwarded this part of Labrynth when I was little.
