Recommended: The Wackness (2008)

This movie is better than the trailer makes it out to be. It’s a simple touching coming of age story with just enough testosterone to make it not too soft and enough hip hop culture to make it not lame. Good story, good acting, good cinematography, good editing, good music.

3 Inspirational Movies About 90s Contemporary Art

Looks like movies about contemporary art come out 10 years after their time. I’ve watched two of these movies in the past month and I think the third one serves as an inspiration to the entire generation, though he’s not referenced in the other movies.

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

Exit Through The Gift Shop

A movie that begun as a documentary about street art, becomes a documentary by a street artist about the insanity of the original documentarian(sp?). Inspirational insight into the world of street art also provides interesting commentary on the copycat culture and vapid state of the contemporary art world.

Beautiful Losers (2008)

Beautiful Losers

Look into the cultivation of the 90s underground art community. Talks to dozens of different artists from the movement about their inspiration and how they all came together. My only complaint about this movie is the requirement of dejection in the movement… but I guess that was the 90s.

Basquiat (1996)

Basquiat

The influence of Basquiat is all over the previous two films. Street art, kid art, pop art… Basquiat helped define all of these. This is the only non-documentary of the 3, but the tragic story is well told and the cast is pretty amazing. A must see for any creative.

So what are the contemporary art films that come out in 10 years going to be about?

Two Movies about Dick

Whenever I see movies that inspire me to get off my ass and make some shit, I try to share. In the past week I’ve seen two. Both are character movies… is that a real thing? Well what I mean by that is both are movies that are driven by some amazing acting… as opposed to special effects or action or sex and stuff… though one of them has a shit ton of porn in it.

Frost/Nixon
This isn’t the one with a shit ton of porn in it. After seeing Notorious and W, Lisa and I talked about how difficult it is to play real people (Notorious is totally worth seeing for fans but I was really pissed that the guy who plays Puffy couldn’t even do the Puffy dance right). I just learned that this movie was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor last year, so I guess my acknowledgment of the super acting isn’t new, but Frost/Nixon is about the aftermath of the impeachment of Richard Nixon via the making of a long shot exclusive interview idea of a Mario Lopez level British talk show host. It’s better than it sounds.

Good Dick
This is a good couples movie about this video store employee weirdo who practically stalks this anti-social weirdo who comes in to the video store everyday to rent 70s porn. This is a super slow movie… not for a work night watch… more for a Friday night when you have nothing better to do than write about the movie you just watched. There’s a cool documentary about the sundance film festival in the extras on the DVD. The real Mario Lopez recommended this one to me (of course it’s about porn).
