Lunchroom Pizza
I had no idea the rest of the US ate the same rectangle pizza. I’d eat that.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 11 Tokyo | Under advisement of our new friend Yonatan, we avoided the chaos on our last night and headed to the west border neighborhood, Shimo Kitazawa, for a new quiet bohemian vibe. Choosing a restaurant here was really difficult as English menus aren’t really the thing to do in border hoods… we stuck with fish cakes and sashimi.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 11 Tokyo | Under the Twitter advice of the root’s questlove, we took to Mos Burger for our hangover meal after choosing to stay up to catch the subway at 5am instead of taking an expensive cab home at 2am. It wasn’t very good, though the Kinpira burger with a rice patty instead of a bun looked tempting.

My Trip to Japan by Food - The Last Meal, Narita Airport | Just like all the Japanese people that were flooding the Burger King at the beginning of our trip, we desperately ran for the last sushi bar we could find. The airport bar was an expensive, but worth while trip. I will miss you super fresh sush.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 10 Tokyo (Golden Gai, Shinjuku) | Finally ramen. We found this place Nagi in the coolest little drunken neighborhood in Tokyo. This area of tniy two story buildings is the only area in Shinjuku that wasn’t crushed after to war to rebuild. The area is about 1/4 square mile and packs what we’ve heard, up to 280 bars in that little space. Each place is about 10’ x12’, big enough for a bar and a squeezed in 5-10 bar stools. Nagi was a tiny second floor joint where you pay a machine for your ramen… it had no AC so the hot ramen during the hot summer made for a schweaty, but delicious meal.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 10 Tokyo (Asakusa) | One of the most difficult parts about eating in Japan for those who can’t read kanji is choosing a restaurant, there are usually anywhere from 3-20 restaurants on one block. A lot of times restaurants would have these window displays of ugly ass wax food. The wax model of the Conger Don led us to choosing this restaurant. Grilled eel over rice with a side of clear broth.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 9 Tokyo (Asakusa) | The packaging of these pizza chips deceived my taste buds. I don’t know what the packaging for fart chips would look like, but that’d more accurate as far as taste is concerned.

Anonymous asked: What is your favorite food that you have tried in Japan?
Can you get it some where here in Mpls? (of course not comparable)

this is the first question i’ve been asked that isn’t founded in attempting to figure out why i’m stupid. i’m no expert on minneapolis japanese food as it’s mostly too expensive for normal life, but I do have a few favorites.

When I’m feeling like I can spend some cash, I head to Kikugawa on St. Anthony Main for sushi.

For lunch, I’ve found two good places in the sky-way. I eat Zen Box, which has the best fast food japanese i’ve had in america… maybe the only fast food japanese i’ve had in america. Also… for the most part, I try to avoid fast food sushi, but this small chain called Sushi Do came recommended by my sushi particular grandma… and it’s good.

This trip has expanded my awareness… so I’m sure I’ll be craving more variety once I get back.

My Trip to Japan by Food - Day 9 Tokyo (Asakusa) | The appetizers are some of my favorite things in Japan. For our first day back in Tokyo, we stopped by a cute indoor/outdoor Yakitori bar. We started our meal with this delicious salad with avocado and salmon sashimi.
